Body Mass Index (BMI) is the numerical value of your weight in relation to your height. This number does not relate to body fat percentage.
BMI is used to determine if someone is at a healthy weight in relation to their height. According to Harvard Health the most basic definition of overweight and obesity is having so much body fat that it presents a risk to health. A reliable way to determine that is to calculate a persons BMI.
According to the CDC BMI is calculated the same way for both adults and children. This measurement is based on the formulas below.
